You may have seen some recent media activity around a early learning centre in Melbourne which has been identified by health and safety inspectors as being wrapped in combustible cladding.
Cladding is used in building construction to provide a degree of thermal insulation and weather resistance, and to improve the appearance of buildings. However certain types of cladding have proven to be flammable and therefore a major safety risk for communities.
You can read an ABC article about flammable cladding and how buildings can be made safe here.
Given the recent reporting of the inherent risks regarding the use of flammable cladding in building construction, we are urging all early learning service providers to clarify the status of their service with their landlords or architects/building surveyors, so that appropriate remedial action can be taken as soon as possible if necessary.
As building regulation is a state issue, there are different regulations and processes in place regarding flammable cladding for each state.
For further information please contact your local council's planning department or your state government's Department of Planning and/or Building Authority.
