Paving the way to safer workplaces

The Michael Hughes Foundation (MHF) is a purposeful Australian Social Enterprise & NFP with a primary mission to Turn Bystanders Into First Responders in cardiac arrest events.

The Foundation is focussed on increasing the efficiency and community coordination of individuals when responding to cardiac arrest to reduce time

.

The Australian Childcare Alliance (ACA) has proudly partnered with MHF to help educate and equip the early learning sector and the broader community with the knowledge and the tools to allow for the best possible emergency response to cardiac arrest and first aid events.

What all Australians should know

There are a wide number of medical events that you can possibly have to deal with, from minor burns, to broken bones, choking or even febrile convulsions in a child under the age of 4.

The most severe medical emergency is a cardiac arrest.

A cardiac arrest is when a person becomes unconscious and stops breathing. It is when the person’s heart stops beating (electrical). A cardiac arrest is not a heart attack. The person is considered clinically dead and if no action is taken, the person will pass away.

Each year, there are over 30,000 cardiac arrest events that occur in the Australian community, and of that number, less than 9% will survive. Survivability can be increased to more than 60% - 70% for an individual by the simple actions of bystanders prior to the medical response of the Ambulance service in your State.

The reasons why someone has a cardiac arrest are many and varied, and can include: heart disease, genetics, drowning, severe cases of asthma and anaphylaxis and accidents/trauma. Cardiac does not discriminate and it can occur to a person at any age, and in some cases, without warning.

Regardless of what has led to a cardiac arrest, the required actions that are required by community bystanders include:

  • CALL – Call 000 for urgent medical assistance
  • PUSH – Push on the centre of the chest to administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
  • SHOCK – Provide a shock to the person’s heart (to restart it) by a defibrillator

Although the Michael Hughes Foundation provides a targeted focus on cardiac arrest, they also support increasing confidence for you and your team of staff to act with the wide range of emergencies that could occur in your early learning service.
