ACA calls on PM to save early learning sector

In the context of the coronavirus, the Australian Childcare Alliance (ACA) continues to engage regularly with the Australian Government.

Just like the rest of Australia, the threat of COVID-19 has been hanging over the early learning (child care) sector for a large part of 2020, but the significance of this threat is now at a critical point with the ongoing survival of our sector at stake.

The statistics are compelling. Services have had enrolments withdrawn at a rate of between 30-80% with these withdrawals being put into effect immediately.

Whether they were financial reasons or for protecting the health of their families, Monday March 23, 2020 resulted in many thousands of Australian families withdraw their children from attending our services.

Service providers are now in the unenviable position of deciding whether they can keep the lights on this week.

Without additional financial support, the livelihood of 200,000 educators is on the line. The lay off of these workers would at result in an enormous addition to the Services Australia systems and payments.

ACA completely understands the pressure on Government to provide support across the broader economy and that it has already promised support to a range of organisations in the first two stimulus announcements but we have reached a critical juncture in the survival of our sector.

We urgently request that the Government waives gap fees for parents as a first step, and honours the Child Care Subsidy payments to centres as they stood on 1st March and applies this beyond.

This alone is not enough to save our sector but will at least allow for some cash to flow to ensure that each provider can meet their commitments this week.
